or a story of your best memory please send them here and I will do my best to read them out during this gathering. Regards to all Don and Sue O'Leary ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Neil, I am sorry to advise you that Bernard passed away this morning at 3.30am. He had been suffering from fibrosis
and had been treated for a cancer on his lung along with other conditions. The doctor administered some pain relief
earlier so he was asleep when he passed. He will be missed by so many and I know you and he had a special relationship. I will be traveling to Queensland tomorrow and will be attending his cremation once that has been determined. Barbara
has been advised of his passing and she has sent e-mails to her listing it would appreciated if you can complete
the work of advising those on your listing. Having not heard from you in a while can you please check you have this
e-mail address, I have also requested to be part of your friends an face book. Regards Don O'Leary---------------------------------------------------- Hi Neil, It was very sad indeed to hear about the
passing of our dear friend Bernie Mulhern. Bernie was such a like-able person who had time for everybody and was
always there whenever someone needed advice or had any sort of problem. Bernie became a legend in the Gaming Industry
with his warm approach and understanding. He was a great help to me in the Bahamas and steered me through some difficult situations
along the way. He will be sadly missed, a good leader, a great friend and an excellent role model. Don
Kennaugh ---------------------------------------------------- I think everyone who makes it to this
year's reunion at Trader Vic's in London will join in to raise a glass to Bernie's memory. Barbara. ----------------------------------------
Bernie was very
special by Neil Glander. How often does the big boss concern himself with the problems of a 21 year old whippersnapper of
a lumpy dealer? Granted,
things in the early days of Playboy Bahamas were very different from the usual casino family environment as we were all in
the same boat, well, on the same island anyway. We had only been in Nassau for a few months when I caused a serious road crash. One of my passengers was seriously injured
and although she ultimately survived there was a period of time that I was convinced I had killed someone. I was an emotional wreck and could not
hold a conversation without breaking down. As you might have seen in "how it all started" some of the boys were a great help but Bernie’s help in the first few days was critical. Having decided I could
not be left alone he insisted I live with him for a few days. If memory serves, I slept on the sofa but I do remember being astounded that
the big boss would go to such lengths. They were extenuating circumstances, but how many people in his position would
be so avuncular? He had huge responsibilities and the kindnesses of his actions in those days have come into sharper focus
as I have grown older and wiser. Not as wise as Bernie of course. Despite the obvious gulf in our intelligence he always found time for me.
I remember he went out of his way to come and say hi when I was at P.I. and he was visiting having left a few years earlier. With the advent of email
and the internet we were able to reminisce, thank each other for helping to keep the Playboy family in touch and generally
exchange niceties. Bernie
was a true gentleman! I
think of him often as one of the warmest, kindest people ever. May your God be with you Mate! Look forward to seeing you not too soon.
Neil. ------------------------------------------
I just read your e mail and am so saddened to hear of Bernie's passing. He was a wonderful
person with such a terrific sense of humor. I visited him in Australia a long time ago and we had a lot of laughs. Every Xmas
he would always e mail me a couple of lines and keep me up to date with his news. I'll miss him.
LizaDiana ------------------------------------------ Bernie was the Playboy Casino! We couldn't
have made it without him. If they have tables in heaven, Bernie will be in charge. RIP
Bernie--we loved you. Vic Lownes ----------------------------------------- Dear all, (from Barbara) I'm just too choked to really comment. We've
lost our lovely Bernie Mulhern. I've just come back from Canary Wharf after watching and
listening to a terrific performance by the London Symphony Orchestra playing, amongst other masterpieces, excerpts
from "The King's Speech", I think Bernie would have enjoyed that. I have
an archive of Bernie's wonderful words of wisdom and his mind meanderings of sitting on his verandah, watching the
world go by or talking of his dogs and the various other animals which he adored, the latest one, his miniature
horse called Merlin. When I can stop crying for long enough, I'll dig through my saved e-mails
and forward on a couple of pics and one email chain in particular, that just says it all. Barbar ---------------------
Dear Barbara and
'Apples'. (from Bernie) A sumptuous and succulent email, and a delight to me that you have started
the 'reward myself' programme. Personally I have a review scheduled for the 9th May, so I will look to wait for the
result of that meeting before a ;general' broadcast to the 'Faithful. I have told a few who have been
close to me over so many years, I guess I simply do not want to shock them later, and also because I welcome their generous
and meaningful practical support. What a wonderful trip, and so varied in the vistas and views, and I would imagine the foods and drinks
offered.
I always 'thrill' to the adventures of others, and the detail of their journies. When Mike Basset left, I was appointed
the Casino Manager, which was a complete suprise that came out of 'left field'. I totally loved every day,and laughed
every day, even the bad days. Derek told me years later that my nickname in London was 'The Galloping Dumpling',which was
whispered and passed along the floors as I appeared at the entrance. What Power. In the Bahamas, Neil told me I was reffered
to as 'Bernie Balloon'. I do remember the 'pert apples', and should not as I am at a dangerous age,
and might trip over a part of myself, and take a hip out. I do want to hear more of the trip, when you are settled back in London, and what is
planned for the next several months. If you see or speak to Victor and or Bill, there is no reason why they should not be
told at this stage. Take Good Care. Love. Bernie. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bernie was one of those larger than life characters I feel very fortunate to have known. I have worked for several organisations both in the industry and in later years, out of it, including several
extremely large international corporations and in all those years I have never met a man or manager who I liked and respected
more. He was a true gentleman, who cared for his staff and treated them as friends
while never losing his natural air of authority. I really hope he is in that Casino
in the sky waiting for his staff to join him in another adventure. Steve Kaye --------------------------------------------------------------------------
